Biography

Pir Shams is remembered as a widely travelled missionary-poet who carried the Ismaili message from Iran and Central Asia into the Indian subcontinent. Traditions connect his journeys with Badakhshan, Kashmir, Multan, Sindh, and Gujarat, and his Ginans combine dramatic storytelling with the language of mystical love and recognition. His death at Multan in 1356 is commonly cited, but accounts of his birth differ substantially.
